Gakenke: Rwanda Defence Force and Police Drive Rapid Housing Transformations

Rwanda Defence Force, in collaboration with the Rwanda National Police, is spearheading a transformative housing initiative in Gakenke District, as local leaders intensify efforts to fast-track the construction of a model village aimed at restoring dignity and stability to families affected by disasters.
The Mayor of Gakenke District, Mukandayisenga Vestine, accompanied by representatives from the Rwanda Defence Force and the Rwanda National Police, visited a model village under construction in Mugunga Sector, where joint efforts are underway to uplift the living conditions of vulnerable communities.

The visit served as a crucial moment to assess progress on a project that stands as a clear demonstration of the role played by security organs in advancing social development. Through coordinated activities led by the army and police, the initiative aims to provide safe, dignified housing to families who have been severely affected by natural disasters.
They expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved so far, noting that the construction reflects both quality and commitment. They emphasized the importance of accelerating the remaining work to ensure that beneficiaries can relocate without delay.

The model village includes 12 housing units built under a “Two-in-One” concept, where each house is designed to accommodate two families. This approach maximizes efficiency while expanding access to decent housing for more people in need. The majority of beneficiaries are residents who lost their homes or livelihoods due to disasters, making the project a vital step toward restoring stability in their lives.
The involvement of the Rwanda Defence Force and the Rwanda National Police highlights a broader national commitment to inclusive development and their roles. These institutions continue to actively participate in initiatives that directly improve the welfare of citizens, particularly those in vulnerable situations.
