Golden Pineapple Farming Drives Economic Growth and Transforms Livelihoods in Gakenke District

GAKENKE, Rwanda — Pineapple farming is emerging as a powerful driver of agricultural transformation in Gakenke District, where growing production and rising incomes are improving livelihoods and creating new economic opportunities for local communities.
In areas once dominated by low-return subsistence farming, many households are now turning to pineapple cultivation as a more profitable and sustainable source of income. The shift is helping reshape the district’s agricultural landscape while strengthening household resilience.
Across several sectors of Gakenke, pineapple plantations continue to expand, supported by improved farming practices, farmer cooperation, and increasing market demand.

Local farmers say the crop has become a life-changing opportunity.
“Before growing pineapples, I struggled to provide for my family. Today, I can afford school fees, health insurance, and even save money. This crop has truly changed my life,” said Evariste Mbonyinshuti, one of the beneficiaries.
Another farmer, Selaphine Uwitonze, said pineapple farming has brought both financial independence and renewed confidence.
“Pineapples have given me independence and confidence. I now earn enough to support my family and invest in other activities. My life has completely improved,” she said.
Her experience reflects a wider trend in the district, where more women are actively participating in income-generating agriculture and contributing to household development.
The sector’s growth is also strengthening collaboration among farmers. Through cooperatives and community groups, producers are sharing knowledge, improving production methods, and increasing access to markets.

This collective approach has helped improve both the quality and quantity of harvests, allowing farmers to meet market standards and secure better returns.
Local authorities have continued to support the sector by promoting modern agricultural practices and expanding access to training and resources. Their efforts are helping position pineapple farming as an important pillar of local economic growth.
Beyond higher incomes, the impact is visible in everyday life. Families are improving housing conditions, accessing healthcare, paying school fees, and investing in future opportunities.
As pineapple farming continues to grow, many residents see it not only as a crop, but as a pathway to prosperity and stronger community development in Gakenke District.
