Rwanda to Mark Day of the African Child 2026 with Focus on Positive Parenting and Child Wellbeing
Kayonza, Rwanda – June 2026 – Rwanda is set to commemorate the Day of the African Child (DAC) 2026 under the national theme “Positive Parenting for Every Child: Promoting Child Wellbeing and Ending Violence,” locally translated as “Ndera Neza, Nkure Nemye.” The celebration aims to strengthen efforts to protect children, promote their wellbeing, and encourage nurturing family environments across the country.
Observed annually on 16 June, the Day of the African Child honors the courage of South African schoolchildren who, in 1976, protested against poor-quality education and injustice in Soweto. The day serves as a reminder of the responsibility shared by governments, communities, and families to uphold and protect the rights of children.
This year’s commemoration in Rwanda places special emphasis on the role of parents and caregivers in shaping children’s lives. While the country has made significant progress in strengthening child protection systems through laws, policies, and programs, challenges such as violence, neglect, abuse, and harmful disciplinary practices continue to affect some children within homes and communities.
According to the National Child Development Agency (NCDA) and its partners, positive parenting remains one of the most effective approaches to preventing violence against children and ensuring their healthy emotional, social, and physical development. The campaign encourages parents and caregivers to embrace non-violent discipline, respectful communication, emotional support, and active listening to children’s views.
The nationwide celebration seeks to raise awareness about the importance of positive parenting, strengthen dialogue between parents and children, promote family-based care, and foster collaboration among stakeholders working to improve child wellbeing. It also aims to build stronger community support systems that help families provide safe, caring, and nurturing environments for children.
A range of activities will be organized during the commemorative period, including community awareness campaigns, parenting education sessions, school debates on child wellbeing, social media campaigns, and public dialogues involving parents, local leaders, educators, civil society organizations, religious institutions, and development partners. Media engagement through radio and television programs is also expected to amplify messages on child protection and violence prevention.
The celebration is expected to bring together parents, caregivers, teachers, students, local leaders, civil society organizations, community-based groups, and development partners from across Rwanda. Stakeholders will be encouraged to make public commitments to strengthen child protection efforts and promote positive parenting practices within their communities.
Organizers expect the initiative to result in increased awareness of children’s rights, stronger community commitment to ending violence against children, enhanced participation of children in matters affecting their wellbeing, and improved collaboration among institutions working in child protection.
At the national level, the Day of the African Child will be commemorated on 16 June 2026 at Groupe Scolaire Rwisirabo in Kageyo Cell, Mwiri Sector, Kayonza District. Districts across the country will continue organizing related activities through 23 June 2026, ensuring broader community participation and outreach.
As Rwanda joins the rest of Africa in marking the Day of the African Child, the 2026 celebration serves as a renewed call for collective responsibility in creating a society where every child is protected, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential. Through positive parenting and strong community support, families can play a central role in building a safer and brighter future for the nation’s children.
