Weekend Incidents Disrupt Rwanda: Market Fire in Musanze and Rain Damage in Huye

Kigali — October 10, 2026: A major fire broke out at a busy market in northern Rwanda on Saturday afternoon while heavy rain and strong winds caused flooding and structural damage in the south, affecting communities and infrastructure in at least two districts.

In Musanze District, flames erupted around 4 p.m. at Goico Plaza, the town’s main multi-story market complex. The fire began on upper floors, including areas where second-hand clothing and other goods are sold, and quickly produced thick black smoke that rose over the surrounding streets. Traders and residents evacuated the building, with many women vendors and some children among those leaving. Firefighters reached the scene promptly but encountered difficulties bringing the blaze under control because it was concentrated on higher levels. The cause has not been determined, and no injuries or deaths have been confirmed so far. Damage to goods and the building remains under assessment as efforts continue.

In Huye District in the Southern Province, heavy rain that began Friday night and continued into Saturday, accompanied by strong winds, produced several impacts. In Maraba Sector, floodwaters destroyed a key pedestrian bridge spanning the Mwogo River that had linked residents to Kigoma Sector. The bridge had served as an important safe crossing during the rainy season; its loss has forced people onto longer alternative routes. Farmers in nearby marshlands reported that crops were washed away or submerged, with some saying they expect little or no harvest from affected fields this season. Floodwaters also approached residential areas beyond sugarcane plantations.

In Huye town itself, the same rain and wind storm damaged a Rubis petrol station near Hotel Mont Huye. Parts of the structure and roof were affected, and falling debris struck at least one motorcycle. No injuries were reported from the incident. District officials have directed residents to use temporary detours, including routes through Kanyinya–Kabuye–Maraba Sector offices and Kanyinya–Gasumba–Mwogo VTC, while the situation is reviewed.

Similar rain and wind conditions on Friday damaged roughly 13 houses in Muganza Sector of Rusizi District, in villages including Gashisha, Gisozi, and Rubyiro.

These events coincide with forecasts of rain across much of the country on Saturday and continued rainfall into the following days, with higher totals expected in western and northern areas. The current rainy season has been projected to bring above-average precipitation overall, raising the possibility of further localized flooding, strong winds, and related risks in vulnerable areas.

Local authorities continue to monitor both the Musanze market fire and the rain-related damage in Huye and neighboring districts. Further details on the extent of losses and any additional effects are expected as assessments progress. Residents in affected zones are advised to follow guidance from district officials regarding routes, safety, and recovery.
