WASHINGTON, D.C. – The US Department of State has announced a major new initiative with SC Johnson and the Global Fund to deploy an innovative American solution aimed at reducing the burden of malaria. The collaboration will focus on distributing “The Guardian,” a first-of-its-kind American spatial repellent designed to save lives.

The Department will utilize the Global Fund to support the procurement and distribution of approximately 30 million Guardian spatial repellents. This effort is expected to protect more than 60 million people over the next three years.

Championing American Technology and Global Impact

The Guardian spatial repellent is described as a novel vector control tool and the first American product of its kind. Field testing has demonstrated its breakthrough efficacy of one year, allowing it to protect families through multiple malaria seasons.

The initiative aims for rapid, at-scale delivery across high-burden countries. Building on past successes, the Department and the Global Fund are collaborating to quickly deploy the repellents. This launch is intended to reduce cases in high malaria burden countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and accelerate progress toward malaria elimination in Southeast Asia.

Supporting American Innovation and Jobs

The Department is framing the investment within the Trump Administration’s America First Global Health Strategy, noting that it continues to invest in supporting medical innovations developed and manufactured in the United States. This investment is expected to support US manufacturing and research jobs, advancing President Trump’s commitment to products “Made in America” and reindustrialization.

Through this model of private sector engagement, the Department is seeking to “bend the curve in the fight against malaria” while expanding markets for US companies like SC Johnson. The approach is designed to increase the return on investment for the American taxpayer by utilizing long-lasting, high-impact tools that advance countries on their journey toward self-reliance.
