RICH Mobilizes Faith Communities in Gisagara District for Malaria Elimination Drive
Gisagara District, Rwanda — On Sunday, June 21, 2026, the Rwanda Interfaith Council on Health (RICH) led energetic community mobilization sessions focused on malaria prevention and response, drawing hundreds of residents in partnership with the Rwanda Biomedical Centre.
Under the national slogan #ZMSWM — “Zero Malaria Starts With Me” (Kurandura Malariya bihera kuri njye), religious leaders, choirs, and faith-based groups used songs, theatrical performances, and interactive discussions to promote practical prevention measures.
Participants learned about eliminating mosquito breeding sites, consistent use of insecticide-treated nets, seeking early treatment for symptoms, and the role of Multi First-Line Treatment (MFT) in effective case management.
The event featured vibrant performances by youth and women’s choirs under large tents bearing RICH and RBC branding.
Health promoters addressed crowds directly, while practical demonstrations engaged attendees on the ground.
Religious leaders emphasized personal and communal responsibility, aligning faith teachings with public health goals.
This weekend’s activities form part of RICH’s broader collaboration with Jhpiego Rwanda under the #STOPAMDR project, which strengthens community-level malaria control, particularly in hotspot areas, and supports Community Health Workers.
RICH has positioned faith communities as key partners in Rwanda’s malaria elimination agenda. Similar mobilizations in recent weeks have covered mental health awareness and epidemic preparedness training, reflecting the council’s expanding role in health promotion since its founding over two decades ago.
Local residents expressed appreciation for the culturally resonant approach, which combines education with entertainment to drive behavioral change. RICH officials indicated that further sessions are planned across other districts in the coming weeks.
