Thousands of fishes died on lake Muhazi
Rwanda’ s Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources has announced death of thousands fishes on Lake Muhazi.
The Ministry in a statement said Findings show that they died from depletion of dissolved Oxygen caused by water turnover which triggers a deadly “algal bloom” phenomenon for mature fish during the night because of Oxygen competition between fish and algues.
To avoid such problems, Cage fish farmers are advised to place their cages at a depth of more than 8m far from the shores, to put enough space between cages, and to clean their cages regularly to allow access to enough dissolved Oxygen, the statement continues.
The Muhazi surrounding community and the general public are reminded that it is absolutely forbidden to eat such dead fish.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources is designing a subsidized insurance product for fish farmers similar to the one of dairy cows, pigs, poultry, and crops dubbed “Tekana”.
