Rwandan Minister Plans Reforms to Boost Agricultural Performance

The Rwandan Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Dr. Musafiri Ildephonse, has announced plans to reform Districts staff responsible for agriculture and animal resources in order to improve their performance and ultimately increase production for farmers. This decision was announced during a two-day meeting held in Nyamata, Bugesera District from July 29-30, 2024, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI).

Dr. Musafiri highlighted that some local government employees in charge of agriculture and animal husbandry lack the necessary knowledge and supervision to effectively carry out their responsibilities. He emphasized the need for institutional reforms to bridge this gap and ensure that farmers receive the support they need.

“We are looking at necessary reforms in the field of agriculture and breeding, both among districts workers and those who collaborate in general,” said Dr. Musafiri. “We discussed the reforms of local authorities to provide better services, especially in agriculture and breeding.”

To prepare for the upcoming crop season A of 2025, Dr. Musafiri urged for all available land in the country to be cultivated to meet the food demands of the population. He emphasized the importance of professional cultivation practices and strategic selection of crop locations to maximize production.

Furthermore, Dr. Musafiri called on agricultural officials at the local level to assist farmers in preparing their fields for planting ahead of the upcoming rainy season. Currently, household food security stands at 79.4%, indicating that the majority of households have access to basic necessities.

Recent statistics from the National Institute of Statistics in Rwanda show a 7% increase in total agricultural production in the first quarter of 2024. This growth is attributed to increased irrigation and improved seed usage among farmers.

As Rwanda continues to focus on enhancing agricultural productivity, Minister Dr. Musafiri remains dedicated to implementing reforms that will benefit both farmers and the overall food security of the country.
