Gakenke: Crop Yields at Risk Due to Pest Infestation in Nyarutovu Valley

Farmers in Nyarutovu Valley, located in Mugunga Sector of Gakenke District, are alarmed after experiencing two consecutive years of significant crop losses caused by pests commonly known as “Uduhuhabana” or “calf tails.” These pests attack seeds and crops during their early stages of growth.

Reportedly, the pests invade the soil after sowing, destroying seeds before germination or damaging the roots of young plants. This results in stunted growth or total crop failure.

Emmanuel Hakorimana, a local farmer, stated that no effective pesticide has been found so far to manage the infestation. “These pests destroy all the seeds in the field. We’ve tried everything, but we haven’t found a solution,” he lamented.

Another farmer, Annualithe Mutezimana, shared how her family relied on farming for their livelihood and basic necessities. Now, due to the infestation, her household is struggling. “I no longer get any harvest. Every time I plant, I end up with nothing. We are urgently seeking help from agricultural authorities.”

The Mugunga Sector administration has acknowledged the issue but is awaiting research findings and expert advice to determine the appropriate response.

Dr. Athanase Hategekimana of the Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) explained that such pests tend to emerge when rainy seasons are followed by sunny weather, particularly in fields with poorly decomposed organic manure. He recommended farmers use well-rotted manure and pre-treat seeds with Imidacloprid, a pesticide known to weaken the pests and protect young crops.

Currently, 12 hectares out of 36 in Nyarutovu Valley are visibly affected. Farmers in the area are calling for urgent support, as the ongoing crop damage risks deepening hunger and economic hardship in the community.
