Gakenke: Farmers Urged to Embrace Smart Agriculture as Planting Season Begins with Renewed Hope and Commitment

The lush marshlands cultivated by Cooperative Icyerekerezo 2031 TABA in Gashenyi Sector of Gakenke district, is where new agricultural season was officially launched with energy, optimism, and a clear call to action for farmers to transform their practices.

It marked by the planting of beans across 64 hectares, symbolized not only the beginning of a farming cycle but also a renewed commitment to productivity, resilience, and sustainable agriculture.

The launch brought together key leaders and stakeholders, including the Gakenke district ‘s Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, Aimé Niyonsenga, the District Police Commander SP. Kayumba Canisius, the head of RAB Musanze Station, Rukundo Aimable, district officials, agricultural partners, and a large number of farmers. Their presence underscored the importance of agriculture as a backbone of livelihoods and economic growth in the district.

Farmers themselves express their expectations and commitments for the new season. Many shared their determination to apply the advice given and improve their agricultural practices.

One of the farmers, Mukakarera Jackeline, expressed her enthusiasm for the new season and the knowledge she gained.

“This season, I have decided not to leave any part of my land unused, I will apply both organic manure and chemical fertilizers as advised, and I am also planning to register for crop insurance. In the past, we feared losses due to unpredictable weather, but now I understand that insurance can protect us. I believe this will help me increase my harvest and improve my family’s living conditions.” she said.

Another farmer, MUJYAMBERE Eduard, also shared his plans, highlighting a shift in mindset among farmers in the area.

“We used to farm the traditional way, but things have changed, This time, I will follow all the recommendations given by experts. I will plant on time, use improved seeds, and ensure my crops are well taken care of. I also plan to work closely with fellow farmers iso we can support each other and share knowledge.”

The cooperative itself, Icyerekerezo 2031 TABA, has been playing a significant role in mobilizing farmers and promoting collective efforts in agriculture. Through shared resources, training, and coordinated activities, members are able to achieve more than they would individually.

Local authorities and partners reaffirmed their commitment to continue supporting farmers through training, access to inputs, and extension services. They emphasized that collaboration between farmers, government institutions, and partners is key to achieving sustainable agricultural development.

The first seeds were planted in the marshland, the atmosphere was filled with hope and determination. This activity can be considered as a practical reminder that the future of agriculture lies in adopting modern techniques, maximizing available resources, and building resilience against challenges.
