The Chamber of Deputies has organized a series of field visits for Members of Parliament in all districts to oversee government activities and gather firsthand information on efforts to increase agricultural productivity. The visits will focus specifically on increasing the productivity of both food crops and cash crops, including coffee and tea.

The nationwide schedule for the visits is set to take place from May 28 to June 4, 2026, in all districts. In the City of Kigali, MPs will conduct visits across all sectors from June 6 to 7, 2026.

Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Gertrude Kazarwa, highlighted the purpose of the initiative, stating, “We continue to prioritise our oversight responsibilities regarding government activities and staying close to the citizens”. She added that these visits are crucial to “gather firsthand information from the local communities and stakeholders to ensure that programs aimed at increasing agricultural productivity yield expected results and improve the welfare of Rwandans”.

During their tours, Parliamentarians will inspect agricultural activities and engage in extensive discussions with local government authorities, farming cooperatives, development partners, and residents.

The primary focus of these exchanges will be on addressing ongoing challenges in the agricultural sector, which include:

  • Low utilization of agricultural inputs.
  • Climate change issues.
  • Inadequate agricultural infrastructure.
  • The essential need to connect farmers to markets.

In addition to their formal oversight duties, Members of Parliament are scheduled to participate in the community work, or Umuganda, at the end of May 2026. They will also take the opportunity to receive citizens’ concerns and assess the resolution status of issues raised during previous parliamentary visits.
