Cool Planet Technologies Unveils High-Efficiency Carbon Capture for Heavy Industry

Cool Planet Technologies (CPT), a provider of membrane-based carbon capture solutions, has successfully demonstrated its modular technology’s effectiveness in addressing emissions from “hard-to-abate” sectors such as cement, lime, and steel. At a pilot facility in Grimsby, UK, the company showcased real-time carbon dioxide capture efficiency, verified by Vaisala MGP241 inline measurement probes. The live data confirmed the technology’s high performance, with capture rates matching predictive models to within 1%.

The core of CPT’s offering is a membrane-based solution commercialised from research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon in Germany. This flat-sheet membrane technology, which CPT’s CTO Simon Gorringe describes as highly efficient and compact, requires no chemicals or consumables, giving it significant advantages over alternative capture methods. CPT CEO Andrew Corner noted that providing transparent and reliable performance data is crucial for building trust in carbon capture.

Following the successful demonstrations, CPT is moving to commercial-scale deployment. The company has begun assembly of a 10,000 tonnes-per-annum (tpa) carbon capture plant at Holcim’s Höver site, with operations slated to begin in the second quarter of 2026. This project is intended to be a 12-month demonstration of the technology’s operability and economics at scale. Looking ahead, CPT and Holcim plan to collaborate on a larger facility to eventually capture an estimated 800,000 tpa of Höver’s CO2 emissions, highlighting the technology’s potential for widespread decarbonisation across Holcim’s global network and the broader hard-to-abate industries.
