ARCOS Network Leads the Way as Carbon Market Opens New Opportunities for Communities and Environmental Protection

The growing importance of environmental protection and climate finance in Rwanda was highlighted during a televised discussion on Isango Star TV, where leaders from the Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS), Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), Water Sector, and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) came together to explain how the carbon market works and its potential to benefit communities.

The discussion also focused on the role of ARCOS Network in promoting environmental conservation while improving livelihoods, positioning the organization as a key player in Rwanda and Africa’s green growth journey.

During the program, the Founder and CEO of ARCOS Network, Dr. Sam Kanyamibwa, began by explaining the core mission of ARCOS, describing it as an organization dedicated to environmental conservation while supporting communities, particularly across Africa. He emphasized that environmental protection should go beyond words and be reflected in practical actions that directly benefit both nature and people.

“ARCOS is an organization that focuses on protecting the environment while supporting communities, especially in Africa. We call upon everyone to become true friends of the Nature not only in words, but through real actions. The communities we work with have understood this vision and are actively engaged in protecting the environment while ensuring productivity.” He emphasized.

Dr. Kanyamibwa further highlighted that ARCOS supports communities by providing trees that play a critical role in reducing carbon emissions while also generating economic value.

He pointed out that these trees not only improve air quality but also produce fruits and other benefits essential for daily life, while helping to combat soil erosion and improve agricultural productivity.

“We provide trees that help reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and at the same time produce fruits needed in daily life. The main challenge is lack of information, but we encourage people to get involved because new projects bring new opportunities. This carbon initiative must benefit the citizen who has contributed to it, ensuring that communities gain real value from protecting the environment.” He explained

The discussion further explored how the carbon market operates, explaining that activities such as tree planting and sustainable land use can generate carbon credits that are traded on international markets. This creates a direct link between environmental conservation and economic gain, allowing communities to earn income while contributing to global climate solutions.

In addition to carbon absorption, the trees distributed by ARCOS are also used to combat soil erosion, helping to protect land and improve agricultural productivity. By stabilizing the soil and enhancing fertility, these efforts contribute to food security and resilience among rural households.

The collaboration between ARCOS Network, government institutions, and development partners demonstrates the importance of collective action in addressing climate change. By combining environmental conservation with financial incentives, these efforts are helping to transform how communities perceive and engage with environmental protection.

Rwanda continues to position itself within the global carbon market and to this end, initiatives led by ARCOS Network are proving that environmental conservation can be a powerful driver of economic empowerment. Through strong community engagement and innovative approaches, the country is demonstrating that protecting the environment is not only a responsibility but also an opportunity for growth and improved livelihoods.
