How Wheat Farming is Lifting Families Out of Poverty in Gakenke

In Gakenke district’s rural areas, wheat farming has become more than just an agricultural activity, it is now a powerful engine of transformation, restoring hope and improving livelihoods for countless families. What was once seen as a simple crop has evolved into a dependable source of income, enabling farmers to meet their basic needs and secure a better future for their children.
Over the past few years, the promotion of wheat cultivation has significantly changed the lives of smallholder farmers. With access to improved seeds, fertilizers, and modern farming practices, production has increased, and so have the benefits. Fields that once yielded little are now covered in golden harvests, symbolizing both hard work and new opportunities.
For many farmers, wheat has become a pathway out of poverty. Increased yields have translated into higher incomes, allowing families to invest in essential services such as education and healthcare. As a result, households are experiencing improved living standards and greater financial stability.
Theoneste IZABAYO, One farmer, reflecting on this transformation, shared his experience:
“Before we started growing wheat using modern methods, life was very difficult. Harvests were poor, and I could not afford school fees for my children. Today, everything has changed. I pay school fees without any problem, I have health insurance for my family, and I can buy food and other basic needs. Wheat farming has truly improved our lives.”He stated
His story is echoed by many others who have embraced wheat cultivation. The crop’s reliability and market value have made it a preferred choice for farmers seeking steady income.
UWIDUHAYE Aline, Another resident also expressed gratitude for the impact of wheat farming:
“Wheat has brought a big change in my family. In the past, I struggled to provide even the simplest necessities. Now, I pay for my children’s education on time, I contribute to health insurance, and I can afford clothes and household items. I even save some money for the future. This is something I never imagined before.” She emphasized

These testimonies highlight the profound impact that agricultural transformation can have when farmers are supported with the right knowledge and resources. Beyond individual success, wheat farming is also strengthening local economies by increasing food production and creating opportunities in markets and trade.

As golden wheat fields continue to expand across the countryside, they carry with them stories of determination, resilience, and success. They stand as a powerful reminder that with the right support and commitment, agriculture can transform lives in extraordinary ways.
